The Brussels' Palace of Justice is a symbol for the power of Justice, dominates the skyline of Brussels and is a window to the past. Yet the stately justice building is hard to secure and to modernize.

In this context and taking into consideration the Belgian chairmanship of the European Union, the Belgian Buildings Agency and the Department of Justice are holding an international ideas contest under the name of ‘Brussels Courthouse: Imagine the future'.

Imagine the future for the Brussels Courthouse and its surrounding area.

Objective

The goal of the contest is to develop a vision about the future of this Courthouse. This vision will be expressed in one or more rough ideas regarding an architectural and urban project for the building and the surroundings of the Poelaert square. Rather than on finished urban development or architectural projects the contest focuses on ideas involving the functions of the Palace of Justice such as the future judicial or other functions of the building and the surroundings of Poelaert square.

The proposed projects need to take into account the monumental value of the building as well as the significance of this location in a present-day context. The line of approach is kept as wide as possible.

The participants may cover one of the following two scenarios:

or the Palace of Justice with a (partially) judicial function as, e.g., the Court of Appeal (civil department), the Court of Cassation, the office of the public prosecutor, the Court of Assizes and the bars;

or the Palace of Justice without any sort of “judicial” function.

Projects will be assessed according to the following criteria:

the relevance of the answers developed in the project to the problem,

the feasibility of the idea,

the novelty of the idea,

the quality of the project presentation and the quality of integration in the environment of the Poelaert site, either by contrast or by analogy.

Prizes

An amount of €60,000 will be divided under the 2 scenarios in the course of which each scenario will be rewarded as follows:

€15000 for the winner

€10000 for the runner up

€5000 for the third laureate

The Belgian Buildings Agency will support traveling expenses and accommodation expenses of the prize - winners invited on the day of the award ceremony and residing outside a radius of 200 km around Brussels (two hotel nights in Brussels). This applies only to the official representative of the team (individual appointed by the team).

Rules

The contest is meant for professionals from all countries, either active in the field of architecture, urban planning and Justice or engineers, market development engineers, artists, … as well as schools active in these fields.

Porto Alegre is recognized worldwide for providing a platform for debates on global public policies and the possibilities for social action. The international student competition will be an opportunity to debate local issues of importance for both Porto Alegre and many other cities in all corners of the world.

The entries of the student competition should propose architectural, urban and landscape projects, aiming at the urban renewal of the area of Morro Santa Tereza, located in the southern part of the city.

The dialogue between undergraduate and post-graduate students from different places with different cultural backgrounds will promote the exchange and generation of knowledge, focusing on urban innovation, enforced by social inclusion, environmental protection and the qualification of public space.

Objective

The entries should reflect innovative ideas and the proposals should search for urban renewal of the project area of Morro Santa Tereza.

The dialogue between graduating and post graduating students from different places with different cultural backgrounds will promote the exchange and generation of knowledge related to the competition and to urban innovations worldwide. The challenge faces main issues of development, such as social inclusion, environmental excellence, integrative landscape architecture and urban quality.

The 87 hectares of Morro Santa Tereza area is located in the south of the city, at the fringe of the historic city center. The site for the International Student Competition was suggested by the Porto Alegre Municipality. The proposed area of intervention has great potential for changes in the now derelict urban environment, focusing on social relations and environmental sustainability.

Currently, it is occupied by a diversity of functions and building types, including media headquarters, social institutions of unattended children & pensioners, and a football sport complex.

It is an urban area of constant social tension, including a residential neighbourhood with mixed housing segments, from upper class to low-income housing and favelas, with and without land regularization.

The vicinity of Lake Guaíba portrays the area, so as its hilly landscape, providing views to and from the city that are very characteristic and important for Porto Alegre, The area presents as a strategic point for innovative proposals addressing different urban dimensions at street, neighbourhood and city level.

Prizes

This year's challenge is a partnership between INDEX: Design to Improve Life, a Denmarkbased nonprofit organization promoting the application of design and design processes to improve important areas of people's lives worldwide, and UNICEF, the globally recognized organization that advocates for the rights of children all across the world.

The theme of this year's challenge is Designing for Education, a call for design and business students as well as cross-disciplinary student teams to develop design solutions that improve education and the educational environment in developing regions.

Objective

The objective is first and foremost to encourage students from around the world to apply their design skills to global challenges. An additional objective is to teach students about the various processes needed to bring their designs to market, since that is, of course, a precondition for the designs to make an actual difference.

UNICEF has many years of experience working with children in developing countries, and it has pinpointed five challenges that are very relevant to fulfilling the MDGs as well as appropriate for various design disciplines. UNICEF will supply participating students with facts and figures on impact, geographical spread, scale, existing solutions, possible side effects, and other relevant data pertaining to the five cases so that students' solutions can be as realistic as possible.

Improved Education Facilities can improve life in obvious ways by making school an enjoyable experience while increasing learning ability by improving attention.

Sanitation and Hygiene improve life of students with a healthier environment, thereby reducing illnesses and absences.

Gender Parity in Education should ensure that girls get the same opportunity to go to school as boys and thereby improve their lives through equal opportunities, eliminating gender disparity in education.

Finalists take part in a workshop in Copenhagen, followed by an award ceremony.

When considering the future of design let's start looking out into space. What if we could occupy the Moon only 100 years after our first visit there in July of 1969?
SHIFTboston calls on all architects, artists, landscape architects, urban designers, industrial designers, planners, engineers, and anyone else who would like to propose a Lunar concept.

Think beyond what is familiar and envision design in deep space.
