This year's challenge is a partnership between INDEX: Design to Improve Life, a Denmarkbased nonprofit organization promoting the application of design and design processes to improve important areas of people's lives worldwide, and UNICEF, the globally recognized organization that advocates for the rights of children all across the world.

The theme of this year's challenge is Designing for Education, a call for design and business students as well as cross-disciplinary student teams to develop design solutions that improve education and the educational environment in developing regions.

Objective

The objective is first and foremost to encourage students from around the world to apply their design skills to global challenges. An additional objective is to teach students about the various processes needed to bring their designs to market, since that is, of course, a precondition for the designs to make an actual difference.

UNICEF has many years of experience working with children in developing countries, and it has pinpointed five challenges that are very relevant to fulfilling the MDGs as well as appropriate for various design disciplines. UNICEF will supply participating students with facts and figures on impact, geographical spread, scale, existing solutions, possible side effects, and other relevant data pertaining to the five cases so that students' solutions can be as realistic as possible.

The INDEX: Design Challenge has three sub-themes, combined with an open challenge:

Improved Education Facilities can improve life in obvious ways by making school an enjoyable experience while increasing learning ability by improving attention.

Sanitation and Hygiene improve life of students with a healthier environment, thereby reducing illnesses and absences.

Gender Parity in Education should ensure that girls get the same opportunity to go to school as boys and thereby improve their lives through equal opportunities, eliminating gender disparity in education.

Prizes

Finalists take part in a workshop in Copenhagen, followed by an award ceremony.

Rules

INDEX: calls for faculty, students and recent graduates to participate in the upcoming INDEX: Design Challenge developed in close collaboration with and endorsed by UNICEF.

Design students are encouraged to lead cross-disciplinary teams of engineers, artists, ethnographers, anthropologists, and scientists. Students are also urged to consider the social, cultural, and scientific significance of education and education environments.

The challenges target students from all the design disciplines.

There are no restrictions on the type of solutions that students may submit.

Print design, Web applications, environment design, physical devices, data presentation tools, and other approaches are all encouraged, as are proposals for the conceptual framework or method of dissemination that may propel these designs into public consciousness.

How to enter?

Design students, teams of students, and educators wanting to enter the design challenge are required to register by e-mail to lvk [at] indexaward.dk (please replace [at] with @).

Playable is the annual global search for inspiring play design.

Playable10 invites designers of all types from around the world to design playground equipment and spaces that will give a sense of place, wonder and fun so strong that they will entice children, teens and adults outdoors to play.

Georgia Tech and the Atlanta Taskforce on Play (ATOP) are organizing the Playable10 competition in a belief that the talent is out there to find the answers to the challenges presented.

Introduction

Children's health is suffering because the appeal of sitting in front of an electronic screen is winning out over getting outside to play. Conditions such as childhood obesity, diabetes, ADHD, and vitamin D deficiencies (and many others) are on the increase, but their symptoms are lessened and sometimes eliminated by regular outdoor play. The problem is that many playgrounds are without challenges and look the same as every other playground and so a child's excitement is soon lost, if they even go out there in the first place.

Another problem is that manufactured playgrounds can be too expensive for some communities so their children do without. We think there are options for everyone to "win" in this game by building their own play areas with easily found materials, incorporating manufactured equipment in creative ways, building play areas different from any we have ever seen before, and even building a fort in your own backyard.

The idea for Playable10 came from the highly successful 1954 Playable Sculpture Competition put on by the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Objective

Create innovative, inspiring, sustainable, multigenerational play spaces with the power to change communities and lives.

One (1) winning playspace built in Woodruff Park in downtown Atlanta in 2011;

One (1) winning conceptual master plan design has the potential to be a great influence on the Atlanta Beltline (see category for explanation).

Also an exhibition of the most interesting designs submitted to Playable10 will be held with the Designing for Play Symposium at Georgia Tech. Talks are underway to develop a touring exhibit.

Freegreen is challenging you to help defining the design concept of Affordable Luxury. Gone are the days of free-flowing mortgages, and multi-million dollar McMansions. In this “new normal” home owners still desire livable, ascetically pleasing, and luxurious homes, but now need these same concepts implemented into smaller more affordable residential structures.

This creates the perfect opportunity for the design community to take charge of this challenge and be the first to create new home designs, and design delivery methods, that meet today's restraints and requirements.

Objective

You will have to select one of the two user profiles (Profile 1, Profile 2) and design a single family home that fits the profile you've chosen.

The Who's Next 2.0 Judging Criteria is as follows:

Livability: Has the design entry met the needs, requirements, and desires represented in the Contest Profile for which the entry has been designed.

Affordability: Could the design be built for the targeted budget range of $220,000 to $410,000. It is understood that all entries are only schematic designs, and best efforts will be made by the Jury to interpret design intent and establish reasonable estimates on cost.

Clarity: Does the entry have clear, concise, and appropriate description text with each image that explains how the entry (and a given representation) is addressing a given Contest Profile, or General Contest requirement.

Buildability: Could this house actually be built. Please remember that this competition is looking to help change the residential design landscape. If you cannot build a home, then you cannot create real change.

Representation: Different architects work in different ways. Some emphasize photo realistic renderings while others focus on perfecting traditional architectural drawings. We think that all types of representation are great, but we are specifically looking for entries that show high quality representation, and create strong entry identities.

Prizes

Best In Show ($5,000 Prize)

$5,000 Cash - For the best design across both contest profiles

The implementation of your design into a true house plan (full construction document set) by FreeGreen, to which you will retain the rights.

Your winning house plan will be posted on the FreeGreen for-sale House Plan website, Better House Plans

Best In Class (Two $1,000 Prizes)
