Unfixed is a project that explores the relation between photography, postcolonial perspectives and contemporary art. It includes an exhibition, symposium, workshop, artist commission-residency, and a resulting publication. The title refers to the unfixed nature of photography. It explores the elusive “truth” of photography and its relationship to ideas of ethnicity, culture and identity in contemporary art.

Scholars, artists, writers and professionals are invited to submit proposals for visual and/or textual presentations or papers on topics relating to Unfixed.

Objective

This call for proposals could be addressed through a broad range of topics concerning photographic practice, history and/or archives. Proposals could deal with deconstruction, reconstruction, collage, appropriation, politics, regionalism and location, subjectivity and/or authorship within photography. They could also concern photography's relationship to other media, vernacular photography, found photography, documentary photography and/or visual culture. Some key theoretical points that strongly relate to the project include cultural hybridity and transculture.

Proposals could also consider current political discussions about culture (assimilation and integration) as they relate to visual culture and photography. Unfixed is looking forward to receiving proposals that look at the inventive aspects of photography.

Proposals are welcome for both or either platform (publication/symposium).

Next to ‘traditional' essays proposals for visual essays are also welcome, which can include vernacular or found photography, and/or photo-works made by applicants, etc.

Proposals for essays or presentations with innovative formats (performance-based presentations, multimedia projects etc.) are encouraged.

All proposals by students will be considered as applications for the Workshop.

Imagine being an integral part of the creation of the world's biggest and greatest conference in computer graphics and interactive techniques. As a Student Volunteer, you will go behind the scenes for an international event that draws thousands of people who share a passion for these advanced technologies, and you will meet and learn directly from industry professionals, artists, and teachers. The SIGGRAPH 2010 Student Volunteers Program is a unique opportunity for a student to become one of the "People Behind the Pixels".

As a Student Volunteer, you will have admission to SIGGRAPH 2010's complete program, including Courses, Talks, Technical Papers, Panels, the Reception, and much more, plus many exclusive Student Volunteer events: rséumé and portfolio reviews, presentations by industry heavyweights, and mentoring from the industry's stars. Several of these influential figures began their journey into stardom as SIGGRAPH Student Volunteers.

All of this is available to high school, undergraduate, and graduate students who are enrolled full time for at least one semester during the 2009 - 2010 school academic year and are at least 18 years of age.

Objective

Submit your application to the Student Volunteers program.

Prizes

All volunteers will receive a Conference Access badge (equivalent to Full Conference registration, excluding conference documentation).
You will have the equivalent of a Full Conference registration, so you will be able to go almost anywhere in the conference, except those places that require special access. The exhibit hall and most of the conference will be open to you during your free time.

Rules

Students who turn 18 after 24 July 2010 will NOT be considered for the 2010 Student Volunteers Program.

Students must plan to arrive in Los Angeles no later than 4 pm on Saturday, 24 July 2010, and depart no earlier than Friday, 30 July 2010.
Applicants MUST be proficient in English, and all applications must be submitted in English.

All students, regardless of discipline or area of interest, are encouraged to apply. No prior experience with the annual SIGGRAPH conference or computer graphics is required. We are looking for reliable, hard-working, self-starting, independent, enthusiastic students who are excited about the conference and who want to be among the next generation of leaders and professionals.

Students can apply to volunteer for either 18 or 30 hours (approximately) during the conference.

Volunteers who are willing to commit for at least 30 hours are eligible to apply for Travel Assistance Awards, which offer financial help for travel to and from the conference. Also, extraordinary 30-hour applicants who live outside the Los Angeles area may be selected to receive complimentary housing during the conference.

Student Volunteers' jobs and activities can consist of anything from checking attendee badges at the sessions to assisting artists in The Studio and helping contributors with their installations. The jobs vary by program, length, and amount of involvement, but all play a very important role in running the conference.

Team Leader jobs and activities are similar to those of Student Volunteers but also include managing Student Volunteers in their areas and coordinating volunteer duties with SIGGRAPH 2010 Committee members. Typically, each Team Leader is assigned to a specific program and coordinates Student Volunteer staffing and tasks with that program's committee.

Other arrangements for arrival and departure may be made by contacting the Student Volunteers Chair but may disqualify applicants from being accepted unless approved by the Chair in advance.

Student Volunteers must present a current, government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license or passport upon check in at SIGGRAPH 2010 in order to receive their conference badges and materials.

Team Leaders also aid in training and supervising Student Volunteers, assisting committee members, assisting attendees, and problem solving.

The International Council for Cultural Centers (I3C), the International Network Cultura21 (Cultural Fieldworks for Sustainability) and the Latin American Network of Art for Social Transformation are organizing the first international summer school of arts and sciences for sustainability in social transformation. The event is planned for August 2010 in Bulgaria, in the beautiful Balkan mountains.

As part of the program of the Summer School, a limited number of workshops will be organized for participants. We are seeking workshop proposals from experienced practitioners and thinkers from the wider academic and artistic fields, who are engaged in the advancement of sustainability (i.e. goals of social justice, ecological awareness and environmental action, human rights and self-determination, cultural and biodiversity, among others), particularly with inter- or trans-disciplinary methodologies or with a potential for inter- and trans-disciplinary dialogues.

We are also particularly looking for action-research methodologies based on Walking and Places: building transformations, which will be the thematic focus of the first edition of the Summer School. These methodologies can include academic as well as artistic, creative processes, or both. They may further explore how movement also relates to place and community development, with the dynamic between movement and place, traveling and home, transnational flows of ideas and people and site specificity (whether individual houses or collective places).
