The IIDA Global Excellence Awards, the international interior design competition, has recently opened for entries for 2013, from interior designers and architects around the world. This annual worldwide design competition was established to honor and celebrate outstanding originality and excellence in the creation of international Interior Design/Interior Architecture projects. A Best of Category winner and a maximum of two Honorable Mentions in each category are selected and a Global Excellence Best of Competition winner is selected from the Best of Category winners. The Type Directors Club (TDC) has recently opened the Call for Entries for its 60th Communication Design competition and 17th Typeface Design competition – one of the most highly-respected and selective competitions of typographic and typeface design from around the world. TDC is once again looking for original print and digital professional or student work produced in 2013, as well as original typefaces designed in 2013. Winning submissions will be displayed in seven exhibitions that travel the globe next year, and will also be published in a beautiful hardbound annual, Typography 35. Entries selected by the jury will receive Certificates of Typographic Excellence.

The European Design Awards (ED-Awards), the annual awards program for the best communication design in Europe, has recently opened submissions for 2014. The competition includes thirty-four (34) main categories and is open to all designers living or working within Europe – for work done for clients outside Europe as well. European Design Awards have been created to celebrate European design with all its regional distinctive elements as well as its common grounds, to facilitate European designers to meet, benchmark, be inspired and build networks, to promote and raise standards for communication design throughout Europe, to properly honor and award people who invest their passion in design and to create a directory of European communication design excellence.

The fifteenth (15th) international animation festival Hiroshima has recently announced the Call for Entries for its 2014 competition, inviting entries from animators around the world. Short animated films of no more than 30 minutes, completed after 1st April 2012, can be submitted, starting 1st February 2014. In 2014, the Festival will award four (4) main and several special prizes, the Grand Prize being more than $10,000!

Full Frame Documentary Film Festival is currently accepting late entries for 2014 and calling all documentary filmmakers to submit short and feature films completed after 1st January 2012. Each spring Full Frame welcomes filmmakers and film lovers from around the world to historic downtown Durham, North Carolina for a four-day, morning to midnight array of over 100 films as well as discussions, panels, and southern hospitality. The Festival is competitive and in 2013, it offered 9 awards, with prizes totaling nearly $50,000 in cash and services.

The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design is now accepting applications for the 2014 Good Design Award – its International industrial and graphic design awards program for the most innovative and cutting-edge industrial, product, and graphic designs. Enter the most prestigious illustration competition for creativity in illustration, the Communication Arts Illustration Competition. Selected by a representative jury of distinguished designers, art directors and illustrators, the winning entries will be distributed worldwide in the Communication Arts Illustration Annual, in print and on the iPad, and on commarts.com. Any illustration first printed or produced from January 2013 through January 2014 is eligible. Each winning entrant will receive a personalized Award of Excellence, milled from solid aluminum and award certificates issued for firms, individuals and clients.

The Society for Environmental Graphic Design (SEGD) has opened the competition for its 2014 Global Design Awards – the only international design awards focused on visual communications in the built environment, highlighting the importance of Environmental Graphic Design (EGD) in connecting people to place. Animafest Zagreb 2014 — 24th World Festival of Animated Film has started accepting submissions for its Short film festival Edition. If you have a short (up to 30 min) animated film produced after 1 January 2012 you’re invited to submit it and enter the Animafest 2014 competitions. In 2014, the Festival will award four cash awards, from which the Grand Prix award includes 2,500 Euro and the “Dušan Vukotic” Prize — for the best student film — 1,000 Euro. Artists around the world are invited to apply to Auckland Print Studio’s 4th International Artist-in-Residence program, to collaboratively produce a suite of hand-printed lithographs. Having printmaking experience is not a requirement, thus all artists are welcome to apply. The Residency is scheduled for 13th December 2013 through 19th January 2014 and lasts 5 weeks. Shared accommodation and all printmaking materials are included. Trips to some of New Zealand’s famous west coast beaches are also an integral part of the residency!
