Fotofestiwal, one of the first photography events in Poland, is currently accepting submissions for its Grand Prix competition for 2014. Grand Prix Fotofestiwal is organized every year, the competition is open and there are no thematic, age or geographical restrictions. One (1) winner and eight (8) finalists will be selected in 2014 and 10,000 Polish złoty (about 2,300 Euro) will be awarded to the winner. Works of the winner and the eight finalists will be presented and exhibited during Fotofestiwal in June 2014. This Call for Submissions is directed at individual photographers. The Organizer – International Festival of Photography in Lodz – is awarding the prizes to those artists who present cohesive ideas, brave visions as well as excellent photographic technique and who use the photographic language in a conscious manner. The Organizer also wants to present interesting personalities and new trends of contemporary photography.

The Friedrich Becker Prize 2014 competition has recently opened for submissions from gold- and silversmiths, jewelry and metal artists and designers, from Germany and abroad. In awarding the Friedrich Becker Prize – donated by Hildegard Becker – the Gesellschaft für Goldschmiedekunst (Association for Goldsmiths’ Art), Hanau wishes to commemorate Friedrich Becker as an extraordinary individual and important designer, and in accordance with his spirit, to recognize the best of the succeeding generation of designers. The Friedrich Becker Prize is endowed with 5000 Euro and has been awarded every three years since 1999, for outstanding, independent design with highest-quality execution.

The Call for the 34th Mini Print International of Cadaqués, 2014 international print competition has been opened and all printmaking artists are invited to enter their work. All printing techniques and tendencies are acceptable and each artist should submit four prints. A Jury of professionals in the field of printmaking will select 6 winning prints, all in the same category. Sale exhibition of the accepted works will be hosted by Taller Galleria Fort in Cadaqués. The exhibition will last around 90 days and will be open to the public daily from 18.00 to 21.30 h, from end of June to 30th September 2014 continuously.

The 26th International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno 2014 is currently accepting Student work for its International Exhibition program. Next year’s International Exhibition will break apart from the Biennial’s tradition by being wholly focused on the work of students rather than professionals. Another Open Call is currently open for the Biennial’s next year OFF program, presented as an open space devoted to workshops, interventions, and other presentations and activities. The theme of the 26th edition of the Brno Biennial is education in the field of graphic design and visual communication. The Biennial will — through a wide range of exhibitions, lectures and accompanying programs — investigate the educational models of contemporary graphic design as well as the methods and approaches of individual tutors and schools. It will also look at the diversity of specific schools, the influence of architecture on education, and the relationship between theory and practice.

Nikon has recently opened the 2014 Small World In Motion Digital Video Competition and accepting movies captured using a light microscope. Any type of specimen and all techniques of light microscopy are acceptable. Three (3) main prizes consisting of Nikon photographic, scientific or industrial equipment will be awarded to the creators of the best entries, from which the first price is valued at US $3,000. The Nikon International Small World Competition first began in 1975 as a means to recognize and applaud the efforts of those involved with photography through the light microscope. Since then, Small World has become a leading showcase for photomicrographers from the widest array of scientific disciplines.

La Trentina and POLI.design invite young designers (under 35) to enter the 3rd A Designer A Day (ADAD) Competition, to investigate what could be the contribution of design in the apple cultivation, processing and consumption process, through the development of new products. There are no constraints or restrictions on materials, technologies or production processes used, but the products and services presented must be able to be produced (in the form of one-shots / prototypes / small batches) and must be in line with the philosophy conveyed by the world of “La Trentina”. The winning projects will participate in the ADAD 2014 event to be held during the week of the Fuorisalone at the State University of Milan, in April 2014.
