The British Journal of Aesthetics (BJA) has opened the 2016 edition of its annual cover design competition, this year themed ‘Art and War’. The competition is open to students on full-time undergraduate or graduate courses at art and design schools or in fine art/design departments in any country, to design a cover for the journal, which is published by Oxford University Press (OUP), both in print and online. The winning design will be used on the cover of the British Journal of Aesthetics (BJA) and this issue will carry a half-page about the winner and his or her work. The winner will receive five (5) printed copies of the issue featuring their design, and will also be invited to choose £150-worth of books published by OUP, free of charge. Runners-up will also be considered for future issue covers of BJA and will be notified in due course.

The National Park Service (NPS) and National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC), in collaboration with Van Alen Institute, launched Memorials for the Future, a competition that aims to rethink the way we develop and experience memorials. Announced by the White House in October 2015 to celebrate the fifth anniversary of Challenge.gov, Memorials for the Future will re-imagine Washington, D.C.’s traditional approach to permanent commemoration. Memorials enshrine what we as a society want to remember. But the places, people and stories that we choose to memorialize and the audiences who encounter them are constantly changing. Memorials for the Future challenges entrants to imagine the possible future of memorials: How can they look forward and not only back? How can we commemorate in more adaptive, interactive, and ephemeral ways?

Granshan 2016, the 9th international Non-Latin Typeface Competition has just been announced and opened for submissions. Type designers, manufacturers or publishers around the world are invited to submit non-Latin typefaces or type families in three new main categories. To recognize the relevance of multiscript, this year the organizers have widened the possibilities of entries. Judging will take place during the ATypI16 Conference, scheduled for 13th–17th September, 2016 in Warsaw, Poland.

Zepter International is pleased to announce its 13th International Design Award, the ArtZept 2016 competition. This time the competition is themed “The Art of Frames” and open for creative ideas for the design and shape of frames for paintings, photographs and mirrors to enclose our cherished memories, fragments of life, lasting impressions, imageries of scenes, and even reflections of ourselves captured in the mirrors of our daily lives. Three main prizes a special award will be announced in the 2016 ArtZept competition. The best design will be awarded with 10.000 Euro, the second best, with 4.000 Euro worth of Zepter products and the third best design, with 3.000 Euro worth of Zepter products.

The Epson Internationa Pano Awards competition, which showcases the work of panoramic photographers worldwide, is now open for entries for 2016. This is one of the largest international competitions for panoramic photography and is open to both amateur and professional photographers. The prize pool for 2016 is $60,000 and includes $25,000 (US) in cash. This year’s competition introduces two new awards — the Carolyn Mitchum Award and the One Of A Kind “Extreme Moment” Award.

The LYON DESIGN! association is calling for projects for its LYON CITY DEMA!N 2017 – Chapitre Biodistrict Lyon-Gerland event. Designers, architects, urban planners, scenographers, associations and groups, including students, both in France and abroad are invited to submit projects which incorporate current and foreseeable changes in urban living, taking into consideration: teamwork, independence, nomadism, dematerialisation, connected lifestyle etc. During the Design/Conception phase, the organizers will provide grants of a maximum of 3.000 Euro (incl. VAT) for each selected project. Additional grants between 3.000 and 10.000 Euro will be privded during the next, Production phase, awarded by associated partner companies. The total funding budget for the event is 13.000 Euro.

The call for entries for the 2016 Art Kudos International Juried Competition and Exhibition has recently been opened. Art Kudos is an annual international juried competition that serves to recognize and honor excellence in the visual arts. The Centre of Culture Promotion „Gaude Mater” is hosting an international exhibition competition for its 9th Biennial Of Miniature Art – Częstochowa 2016. Every artist may send three works in one of four techniques: painting, graphics, drawing, monochromatic photography. The starting point is the size of the works – it cannot exceed 10×10 cm. Jury selected by the organizers will award a Grand Prix and money awards, as well as honorary awards. All artists qualified to participate in exhibition will receive the official exhibition catalogue.

Akademie Schloss Solitude is currently accepting applications for 2017, for its Digital Solitude program for young professionals. The fellowship program is intended for journalists, developers/coders, designers, as well as artists and all other creatives and professionals who work on the development of new digital content and formats. As part of the Program, each year Akademie Schloss Solitude will be awarding a total of 24 months of fellowships to two to four people in 2016 and 2017.

The Santa Fe Photographic Workshops community is calling all photographers (not younger than 18) to participate in its annual photo contest for 2016, themed “Home”. All photographic imagery that can be defined as depicting “home” is eligible for entry. Entrants have the opportunity to win one Grand Prize, one Second Prize, one Third Prize, or one of 46 Honorable Mentions. Entrants who are alumni are eligible to win one Workshops Director’s Award. The total value of this year’s contest prizes is over $8,000.
