The Young Balkan Designers talent platform is hosting its design competition for 2019 on the theme: Circular Design, and invites young designers on the Balkans to participate. The call is open for design projects − products, concepts, services and scenarios that can bring the Balkans to the forefront of a much needed paradigm shift in design, production and consumption. Young designers are challenged to get familiar with the basics of circular economy and explore possibilities of innovative design approach enhancing circularity of product, materials, services and concepts. Between 30 and 40 selected projects will participate in the Talent Exhibition at Mikser Festival 2019 festival, scheduled for 24th–26th May 2019 in Lower Dorćol, Belgrade, Serbia. There will also be a touring exhibition in the region and it will include 10 to 15 selected projects.

Cultural Association SMACH has opened its 4th international call for artists, for a project aimed at deepening peoples interest for art, as well as bringing awareness to the Dolomites region. SMACH.2019 puts it’s main focus to the the word “Heimat” — not a simple word that proves untranslatable in many languages, English and Italian included. The aim of the project is to prepare works of contemporary art based on the word “Heimat”. The ten selected artworks and projects will receive a prize of 2,000 Euro each.

The Society for Experiential Graphic Design (SEGD) has opened entry for its Global Design Awards for 2019. Eligible for submission are projects that have been completed between 1 January 2016, and 31 December 2018, as for Student entries, projects that have been completed in 2017 or 2018 by full-time students. Winners will be honored at the SEGD Global Design Awards Celebration during the SEGD Conference, 6-8 June, 2019 in Austin. Winning projects will also be featured in the SEGD18 awards annual and in the SEGD Global Design Awards archive on www.segd.org, as well as distributed in press releases.

Entry has opened for the Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest 2019, Russia’s only platform for discovering new photojournalists. The contest is open to all young professional photographers around the world of at least 18 years of age and not older than 33. The Grand Prize for 2019 is RUB 700,000 and there are three other monetary prizes for the best work in each competition category.

Finsa, the oldest chipboard and MDF (Medium-density fibreboard) manufacturer in the Iberian Peninsula, is hosting its 2019 competition for students of architecture & design. The International Finsa Award for Students of Architecture & Design 2019 aims to encourage and challenge students to explore and redesign the use of wood and other ecological and recyclable materials in construction. The organizers believe that the future in construction should continue developing this way and know it is possible to achieve. The winning project will be built in the Woodside area of Birkenhead, and its designer(s) will be invited to supervise its construction.

The 62nd annual World Press Photo Contest opens submissions for 2019 and invites all professional photographers to participate with their work. The annual photo contest rewards photographers for the best single exposure pictures contributing to the past year of visual journalism. The winners of The World Press Photo of the Year and The World Press Photo Story of the Year awards will receive €10,000 each. This means all contest winners will share in prizes totaling more than €130,000 in value.
