People rely on the ocean for transportation, recreation, commerce, and livelihoods, but the choices made while navigating can also affect marine life and fragile ocean habitats. Safe and responsible navigation can help prevent vessel strikes, groundings, anchor damage, pollution, and other impacts while also promoting safety for people on the water. The Challenge is open to students worldwide who are 11–19 years old and enrolled in primary or secondary school, or the home-school equivalent. College and university students are not eligible.

Although invisible to the naked eye, microscopic organisms play a vital role in maintaining the health of our ocean and our planet. These tiny but mighty creatures form the base of marine food webs, produce much of the world’s oxygen, recycle nutrients, and even help regulate the climate. The Challenge is open to primary and secondary school students 11-19 years old, with scholarships of up to $500 awarded to the winning entries.

For this year’s contest, use your artistic talents to create a piece of artwork that illustrates how the ocean is connected.

Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation has announced the 2018 Science Without Borders (SWB) Challenge, to once again, inspire student creativity while learning about important ocean conservation issues. The competition for 2018 is themed “Why Coral Reefs Matter“. 2018 has been declared the International Year of the Reef (IYOR). IYOR is a global effort to increase awareness and understanding on the values and threats to coral reefs, and to support related conservation, research, and management efforts. All around the world, nations, organizations, schools, and individuals will celebrate the IYOR 2018 in a variety of ways.
