FINISH Society has recently launched the Sanitation Innovation Design Contest (SIDC), seeking innovative sanitation system designs for business creation. A total reward amount of €10,000 is being offered by WASTE organization for this contest. Entry is open to professionals and students, with entries judged by an international interdisciplinary team. The contest is based on the premise that among other factors, the lack of sanitation coverage in rural India (and elsewhere), is due to lack of innovation on possible ‘designs’ to fit diverse environmental and socioeconomic conditions, water needs and local availability of materials.

As part of the Emergency Sanitation Project, WASTE in close cooperation with the Netherlands Red Cross is hosting the Public Urinals for Emergency Situations Design Contest. The Emergency Sanitation Project aims to source new designs for the safe and convenient disposal of human urine. It is hoped that the contest will provide the humanitarian sector with new ideas and ways of working in order to tackle a critical problem. Twelve (12) projects will be selected and one overall top finalist will receive a field visit of a week including travel and lodging to the country where the produced design will be field-tested or €1000 cash.
