Several European NGOs are engaged in a long term project called ORA (Observe, Rethink, Act) that aim to aware European citizens on Sustainable Development issues and to promote a sustainable lifestyle through the use of different practical tools (Education, Multimedia, Information and Communication) and the organization of international meetings of activists, volunteers and youth workers. Together with this ongoing on process all the NGOs would like to add the positive “interferences” that artists and artistic works can represent. The chosen theme for this artistic call is Sustainable Development and especially Pollution of natural elements (Water, Soil, Air), Waste (Reduce, Reuse, Recycling), Renewable energy sources, Mobility, Critical consumption, Quality of life. ObjectiveImagine and picture the future of our world if the industrialization and crazy and unfair development keep the same rate and rhythm as today. Feel free to state your opinion, to offer a solution, to send a warning or just to document some difficult environmental situation in yours or someone else’s area.

Each year, amateur photographers from around the globe, select 3 of their top photographs, that best reflect a celebration of the mining industry, for submission to the Snowden Photography Competition. For the past 5 years, the competition has grown to a record over 1,000 submissions received last year. 2010 promises to follow this trend with increased interest from not only the photographers, but from the media and industry publications too – don’t miss out on your chance to be part of this increasingly popular event. Submit photos that are related to and celebrate the mining industry. The competition is open to citizens older than 18 from all countries.

The purpose of the contest is to foster interest in the relationship of literature to the visual arts through the design of a hypothetical book cover for Eugenio Montale’s poem The Eel (L’anguilla). This is an ideas competition only: as of this writing there are no plans for the winner’s work to be featured on a forthcoming edition of Montale’s work. The winner of this contest gets a $500 US cash prize.
