The Young Package 2016 International Competition of Packaging Design — themed: “Package Unlimited!” — has opened registration and invites students and young designers no older than 30 to take part. The organizers are looking for imaginative, multi-functional and detailed packages that can be used for several purposes. The challenge is to create innovative packages and show how packaging doesn’t have to end up in the trash. Think of a package that blooms after use, a special pencil case, or a package that becomes part of the product after opening. The best three designs in each of the two competition categories will be awarded with prize money. There are a total of almost 3,000 Euro available and this year, a special three week internship prize will also be awarded.

The Fondation D’Entreprise Hermès has recently launched the 2016 competition — themed: Play — for its Prix Émile Hermès international design award. Professionals younger than 40 and Students in their final year of study, from any part of the world, are invited to enter individually or in teams of up to five people. In the first phase of the competition, all selected finalists will receive funding from the Foundation to produce a prototype of their design. In the second phase, three winners will be selected and awarded a total of 90,000 Euro, of which 50,000 Euro are reserved for the 1st prize, 25,000 Euro for the 2nd prize and 15,000 Euro for the 3rd prize.

To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the first UN General Assembly resolution, dedicated to eliminating nuclear weapons and all weapons of mass destruction, the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs is sponsoring the 2016 UN Poster for Peace Contest – Disarmament. The Contest is hosted to raise awareness of the need for nuclear disarmament and to promote a world free of nuclear weapons. It is open to anyone of any age in all countries, though parents’ permission is needed for participants younger than 13. Three winning designs will be selected and awarded with $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000 (US) respectively.

Submissions are welcome for the 2016/2017 World Habitat Awards competition, for practical and innovative solutions to housing needs and problems. The World Habitat Awards recognize solutions to current housing issues faced by countries all around the world. Projects which view the term habitat from a broad perspective and bring other benefits as well, such as energy or water saving, income generation, social inclusion, community and individual empowerment, health benefits, capacity building or education, are especially interesting. For the 2016/2017 cycle, two (2) winning projects will be awarded with £10,000 each, as well as international recognition. Trophies will also be presented and one representative of each winning project will be invited to attend the awards ceremony.

The d3 organization has opened registration for its Housing Tomorrow 2016 architecture competition. Housing Tomorrow 2016 is open for transformative solutions that advance sustainable thought, building performance, and social interaction through study of intrinsic environmental geometries, social behaviors, urban implications, and programmatic flows. Submissions are judged in two categories. Three (3) cash prizes and several special mentions are available for the best projects.

Toronto Animated Arts Festival International (TAAFI) is accepting short and feature-length animated film submissions of all genres and techniques for its 2016 competition. TAAFI celebrates and explores the world of animation arts across a wide range of styles (2D classical, stop motion, 3D computer, 2D computer, VFX, Pixelation etc.) from all across the globe. All films are eligible for the Grand Prix awarded by an International Jury.

The Type Directors Club (TDC) has opened submission for its 62nd (2016) annual Communication Design Competition, the most highly respected and selective competition of the typographic and typeface design from around the world. Eligible for entry are original graphic design works with a typographic focus. Print and digital works that incorporate type or lettering are perfect for this competition. Entries selected by the jury will receive Certificates of Typographic Excellence. They will be exhibited in the 62nd TDC Exhibition, and appear in Typography 37.

The Malamegi company has launched the A+D+G’16 (Art+Design+Graphics) contest and invites artists, graphic designers, painters, photographers and all creatives around the world to participate. The A+D+G’16 contest is aimed at artist promotion and an opportunity to become involved effectively in the market of art and decoration. Awards for each winning artist consist of a stay in an artist residence at Malamegi company (San Daniele del Friuli, Udine, Italy) and a collaboration agreement with the company.

To honor the memory of Beatrice Warde as its first female member, Type Directors Club (TDC) is hosting a scholarship award competition for undergraduate female students. The TDC Beatrice Warde Scholarship is sponsored by the Type Directors Club and Monotype in the amount of $5,000. It will be awarded to a female student currently enrolled in her junior undergraduate year and will be applied directly to her senior year tuition, which begins September 2016 and concludes in May 2017. In addition to the scholarship award, the student will receive an one-year student membership in the TDC.
