Porada International Design Award 2018, the 7th edition of the international competition, this year is focused on different types of writing desks and dressing tables. The challenge is to interpret the values and identity of Porada, leading brand of Italian design, through the creation of innovative concepts for different types of writing desks and dressing tables, in which the use of solid wood is prevalent (but not necessarily exclusive). A total prize money of 10,000 Euro will be shared between three winners in each of the Professional and Student categories. The winning projects of the competition will also be prototyped and possibly produced by Porada.

The future shaping portfolio-based competition for creative professionals 30 years of age and under — Young Guns — is open for entries in the 16th event. Young Guns recognizes the vanguard of young creative professionals. Founded in 1996, the competition has grown to become one of the most coveted awards for young creatives around the globe. For many, being named a Young Guns winner is a sure sign of a skyrocketing career. Winners will be honored at the Young Guns 16 Awards ceremony — currently scheduled for 15 November 2018 in New York City and presented with the coveted Young Guns Cube, a trophy that is redesigned each year.

The Walk DVRC International Design Competition is seeking visions for Hong Kong’s new Central Business District and a more walkable, pedestrian environment on a 1.4 km stretch of Des Voeux Road Central. It is an idea-based contest to re-envision and re-engage the street as quality public space – a placemaking effort in a vehicle-choked urban street. The five Finalists will be given US$20,000 each for use on production of their entries. These entries, submitted digitally, should take the form of a maximum of 4 A0 boards and may also be accompanied by animation/video.

TAM-TAM, in collaboration with the institute for non-profit communication Divja Misel, opens the tenth Plaktivat competition in designing a city poster on the topic: Let Books Sweep You Away. The goal of this communication is to remind people that book reading is a forgotten pleasure. The winning poster will be displayed on 500 poster locations across Slovenia and entered into competition portions of the Slovenian Advertising Festival (SOF) and the Biennial of Slovenian Visual Communication. The winner receives Plaktivat’s Megafon and a winning plaque. All participants receive a plaque commemorating their participation.

The Planning and Visual Education Partnership (PAVE) Student Design Competition, now in its 24th year, is open for entries for 2018. Geared toward college-level students involved in retail planning, design, visual merchandising and branding programs, PAVE 2018 invites participants to rethink and reinvent how The Home Depot stores can give customers the know-how they need to tackle all their home improvement projects with confidence. Prizes include grants to students and schools and winning students may even see their designs come to life. The grants for 2018 are: $8,000 — for the 1st place winner, $5,500 — for the 2nd place and $3,000 — for the 3rd place. Winners will also receive a travel stipend to be honored at the 2018 PAVE Gala on 5 December 2018 in New York City.

Jerwood Makers Open, now in its seventh edition, is a biennial opportunity and seeks to support exceptional skill and imagination in what are traditionally described as the applied arts. Jerwood Makers Open has established itself as one of the best regarded opportunities for makers in the craft calendar. The award and exhibition freely allow makers to develop their creative ideas and further their practice independently of specific commissioning structures. The resulting work will be shown in a group exhibition as part of the Jerwood Visual Arts programme at Jerwood Space in London next summer, before touring across the UK. Five makers will be selected to each receive £8,000 for the 2019 edition. The award has increased from £7,500 to £8,000 to reflect artists’ time and in acknowledgement of rising production costs.

To “nurture a tradition” for the future, while adopting the tradition, Hida Furniture® Festival in Hida-Takayama — an old city with history and tradition, is hosting a design competition for wooden products in June 2018. The competition theme is “Designs for wooden products” and entry is open for proposal of designs for wooden products such as chair, furniture, lighting, sundries, and building products. The best four (4) designs will be considered for commercialization and awarded a monetary prize. The first prize includes 300,000 Yen (more than $2,700) and the three, second prizes, 30,000 Yen (more than $270) each. Several Incentive prizes will also be announced.

Taipei City Government opens the call for entries for the Taipei International Design Award (TIDA) 2018 — the 11th competition anniversary. Competing fields include Industrial Design, Visual Communication Design and Public Space Design. This year, for the first time, a cross-category “Inclusive Design Award” will be set up, with the theme of playground equipment or playgrounds. The competition sums up to a total prize of NT$ 3,800,000 — which is more than $127,000 (USD).
