Now in its 19th year, the Shriekfest Horror/SciFi Film Festival is calling for entries for 2019 by filmmakers from all around the world. Shriekfest is the Los Angeles’ Premier horror film event, presenting an exciting program of films each fall with beautiful Los Angeles as its backdrop. Both established and emerging filmmakers gain media exposure, connect with the region’s diverse audiences, and participate in an acclaimed event attended by industry professionals as well as horror and scifi fans. Prizes are awarded to the winning filmmaker in each of the five (5) competition categories.

The ZEISS Photography Award is now in its fourth year – and is calling on ambitious photographers from across the globe to present their work around the theme “Seeing Beyond – The Unexpected” to the international jury of experts. Participants are required to submit a series of five to ten photographs, including a description of the images, online. The 2019 winner will receive 12,000 Euro worth of ZEISS lenses, 3,000 Euro ​to cover travel costs for a photography project and the opportunity to personally work with ZEISS and the World Photography Organisation.

KIHARA — a Japanese porcelain producing company, is hosting a design competition for European artists, illustrators and graphic designers. The contest is about designing an original artwork for a 15-cm-diameter porcelain plate. One winning design will be awarded with 1,000 Euro and produced by KIHARA, as well as presented exclusively in the company’s Arita and Tokyo stores and marketed on the European market.

The Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival (CCI-IFF) is now accepting submissions for its 2019 festival. Eligible for submission are films no longer than 95 minutes in length, appropriate for all-ages, completed no earlier than 2017 and previously not submitted to the CCI-IFF. Films will be judged by a panel of industry luminaries and the accepted ones will be shown during CCI-IFF 2019. For each accepted film, a free 4-day professional Comic-Con memberships will be granted to those appearing to discuss the film (limit 3), plus one adult guest membership for each speaker.

LensCulture is calling for entries for the Visual Storytelling Awards 2019, seeking the best documentary and imaginative storytellers in photography. Image makers who are defining contemporary visual storytelling, whether that be through documentary work, imaginative storytelling, or something that combines (or defies!) all of the above, are wanted. This competition aims to uncover photographers from diverse backgrounds and experience levels, share their work with the world and connect them with career-changing opportunities. Winners will be exhibited at Aperture Gallery in New York City in 2019. A total of $15,000 will be awarded in cash.

Entry is now open for the BP Portrait Award 2019, the most prestigious portrait painting competition in the world. The competition is open to everyone aged 18 and over from around the world. After 30 years of sponsorship the BP Portrait Award still represents the very best in contemporary practice. With a first prize of £35,000, and a total prize fund of £74,000, the Award is aimed at encouraging artists to focus upon and develop portraiture in their work.

Art Olympia Executive Committee, in collaboration with Living National Treasure Museum, is hosting the Art Olympia 2019 International Open Art Competition. Art Olympia is an open art competition held as a biennial event with the goal of discovering talented artists from around the world and supporting their art activities. Approximately 160 artworks (80 from Japan and 80 worldwide) will be selected and undergo a final review in Tokyo by a panel of esteemed judges invited from around the world. In addition, 1,000 artists will be honored. The first place winner will receive $120,000.

Type Directors Club (TDC) is hosting its 65th annual Communication Design Competition and accepts original work by designers worldwide. Print or Digital Media (single or series) entries which have been produced or published during 2018 are eligible for submission. Professional and Student work is judged separately. Entries selected by the jury will receive Certificates of Typographic Excellence. They will be exhibited in the 65th TDC Exhibition and appear in Typography 40. The opening of TDC65 will be held in New York City and will be on display during the summer of 2019.

The Aftermath Project has opened its 2019 grant cycle and invites all working conflict photographers around the world to participate with their projects. The Aftermath Project is open to working photographers worldwide who are interested in creating work that helps illumine aftermath issues, and encourages greater public understanding and discussion of these issues. For its 11th grant cycle, The Aftermath Project will award a $25,000 grant to one photographer and announce several finalists.
