Animatron – Babelgum Animation Film Festival

The Hamptons International Film Festival (HIFF) is partnering with Babelgum to co-present an eclectic animated shorts program on-site at the 2010 Hamptons Film Festival, with $20,000 in cash prizes to be awarded by an international jury.

This exciting partnership, sure to be a highlight at this year’s Hamptons International Film Festival, will include a screening of animated shorts, interactive onside audience voting, a symposium discussion among notable animators, and an Animatron Festival reception.

Objective

Eligible films will incorporate any known animation technique, including CGI, stop-motion, Flash, hand-drawn/cel, live-action mixed, claymation, paper-cut, Pixilation, RotoScope, 3D, machinima, and all other. The award categories are as follows:

  • Humor
    • Your submission must be a short cartoon/animation that looks at life slightly askew and which presents a clear, concise and humorous original vision through the use of animation.
    • Your submission must not be longer than 15 minutes in duration.
  • Fantasy
    • Your submission must be a short fantasy film (sci-fi, horror, adventure, outer space, imaginary worlds, genre-based) which presents a clear, concise and original vision through the use of the short animation genre.
    • Your submission must not be longer than 15 minutes in duration.
  • Real life
    • Your submission must be a short animated documentary (RotoScope, interview-based films) which presents a clear, concise and original vision through the use of the short observational, or animation film genre
    • Your submission must not be longer than 15 minutes in duration.
  • Anime
    • Your submission must be a short anime film (Manga, Japanimation, comics-inspired) which presents a clear, concise and original vision through the use of the short animation film genre.
    • Your submission must not be longer than 20 minutes in duration.
  • Minis
    • Your submission must not be longer than 60 seconds in duration and must be animated.
    • Your submission must tell a bizarre, funny, surprising, shocking and/or super engaging story.
    • Your submission should have reasonably obvious ‘viral’ potential.

Prizes

The Grand Jury winner will receive a cash prize of US $5,000.

If you are the 1st place winner of a Jury Award, you will receive a cash prize of US $2,500.

If you are a runner-up, you will receive US $500.

If you are the winner of an Audience Award, you will receive a prize to be determined by Babel and announced on the Babelgum website.

Rules

  • You must not be an employee of Babel or any other person or entity connected with the creation and administration of the Festival, or in any such employee’s immediate family;
  • There is no limit to the number of submissions you can make to the Festival or in any particular category although there is no guarantee that any submission will be accepted by Babel;
  • Each submission may only be entered in a single category;
  • Your submission must be in the English language or have English language subtitles;
  • Your submission must not contain any material which in the sole opinion of Babel is pornographic or obscene;
  • All video files delivered must be progressive scan, also referred to as de-interlaced;
  • There are no restrictions on production year or whether your submission has been previously distributed or entered into any online and/or offline film festival.
