The 2nd Annual BrickStainable International Design Competition has attracted teams from 45 different countries to take on the challenge of designing a sustainable net-zero structure using brick as the primary building material.
The BrickStainable Competition, now in its second year, has already received 205 registrants from 45 different countries and is expecting the number to increase before the closing date.
The top winner will receive a $10,000 cash award and a trip to DC where the Competition Awards Ceremony at the National Building Museum will take place.
Objective
The BrickStainable Competition seeks integrative solutions for a building using clay masonry units (brick) as a primary material. Current Green and Living Building initiatives acknowledge the importance of integrated design solutions to achieve sustainability goals. This competition seeks to explore the potential of brick construction in the creation of an energy efficient building.
Design teams are challenged to maximize the physical characteristics of this construction in the creation of integrated design solutions utilizing the physical characteristics of this material such as thermal mass, porosity (or lack thereof), modularity, color, etc.
It is the goal of this competition not only to stimulate ideas about this material, but also to document and share the best of those ideas with the design community and other influential associations through publications and distribution via the internet.
There are two categories for submissions in the competition:
- Integrated Building Design
- Technical Design

Prizes
The design jury will convene in early 2011 to select winning projects and honorable mentions. Winning teams will receive prizes valued at nearly $50,000 including cash prizes as follows:
- Integrated Building Design Award Winners
- First Prize – $10,000 Cash Award

Rules
- Each participant who submits a design for consideration in the competition shall retain all of his or her rights in the design submitted.
- Potomac Valley Brick and Supply Company reserves the right to publish drawings, written descriptions, photographs of entries and the names of entrants, without compensation.
