Vancouver Film School (VFS), Canada’s premier entertainment arts institution and one of the most distinguished worldwide, is pleased to announce its partnership with SoundCloud, the world’s leading social sound platform, to offer a full-tuition scholarship for its one-year Sound Design for Visual Media program. So exciting!
Contestants will be stretched to create a brand new soundscape based on five different categories describing entities not normally associated with sound.
Open globally to all SoundCloud users, the scholarship is valued at $28,250 for Canadian students and $43,250 for international residents.
Create a Sound That has Never Been Heard Before!
Sound is the glue that holds visual media together, and the professionals that create every sound you hear in a movie, game, and TV show are masters of evoking emotions, advancing narrative, and revealing character through sound. Prove you have what it takes to join their ranks for a chance to win a full scholarship to the Sound Design for Visual Media program at Vancouver Film School.
Pushing your creativity and imagination to the limits while using any sounds or techniques you like, create an original audio track that communicates your interpretation of the following:
- The colour red
- The birth of an idea
- An imaginary animal being born
- Falling in love
- A post-apocalyptic landscape
Entries should be a maximum of 90 seconds in length.
Submissions will be judged on the following criteria:
- Creativity
- Originality
- Frequency spectrum in mix
- Dynamic Range
- Sound fidelity
- Listenability
- Diversity of sounds used
- Stereo image
- Selling factor/Engagement
- Consistency
Win a Full Scholarship to Vancouver Film School’s Sound Design for Visual Media Program
One (1) first place contestant will win a full scholarship to Vancouver Film School’s Sound Design for Visual Media program, valued at up to CDN $43,250. In addition, second and third place winners will receive CDN $10,000 scholarships to Sound Design for Visual Media.
The VFS SoundCloud 2011 Scholarship Contest is Open Worldwide
- You need to meet the following criteria to be eligible to enter:
- You are 19 years of age or older at the close date of the contest or have graduated from high school
- You are able to obtain a Canadian study permit and visa (if applicable)
- You are a registered SoundCloud.com user
- You are committed and able to attend VFS in 2012
- You can submit a maximum of three entries, but only one entry per category.

All entries must be submitted via the contest page. You basically need to create your track and name it properly. Then upload it on SoundCloud and tag it properly. Include a description and that’s it!
