Be part of a bold vision to create a smart, green, and resilient city rooted in Mongolia’s rich cultural heritage. This global design competition invites architects, planners, and innovators to shape the conceptual plan of Hunnu City—a next generation urban center blending innovation with tradition.
With over 1.4 billion MNT in prizes and opportunities to influence a landmark project, this is your chance to leave a lasting mark on the urban future of Mongolia.
Whether you’re an international design studio or a cross-disciplinary team of forward-thinkers, you’ll compete to create a city that is smart, sustainable, climate-resilient, and deeply human-centered.
Participants are invited to propose an urban planning concept for a designated site aimed at developing a city that is smart, green, resilient to climate change risks, human-centered, and promotes a high quality of life.
Hunnu City is being developed in full alignment with Mongolia’s long-term development policy, ‘Vision 2050.’ This policy emphasizes the development of tourism, cultural services, and industries with national characteristics, as well as establishing satellite cities as transportation and logistics hubs in Northeast Asia—goals that Hunnu City has adopted. The city’s development plan includes building on 10.5 million square meters of land, accommodating 140,000 to 150,000 residents, and creating around 80,000 new jobs, directly supporting Vision 2050’s objectives of economic diversification and job growth.
Moreover, Hunnu City’s sustainable, smart, and green development concept aligns with Vision 2050’s goals of environmental sustainability and technological advancement. For instance, increasing green spaces to cover at least 50% of the city’s area, utilizing renewable energy such as geothermal heat, and implementing waste recycling systems contribute to ecological balance. Additionally, the use of smart grids and IoT technologies to automate city operations and enhance residents’ quality of life aligns with the policy’s focus on smart solutions and innovation. By decentralizing Ulaanbaatar and developing new residential zones and economic free zones, Hunnu City contributes to Mongolia’s sustainable future, embodying the aspirations of Vision 2050.
The competition is open to both domestic and international professional organizations, teams, and individuals.
The conceptual design should focus on achieving the following key goals: Integrating Innovative and Technological Solutions Develop solutions that improve the efficiency and effectiveness of urban governance, transportation, energy, and information systems by applying modern smart technologies, thus enhancing the overall quality of life for residents.
