Tapirulan Cultural Association has recently announced its 10th annual illustration competition – Tapirulan Illustrators Contest 2015 – inviting illustrators around the world to participate. The theme for the 10th Tapirulan Illustrators Contest is set to “X” – X like the letter, X like the number 10 in Roman numerals, X like the unknown, X like goodness only knows what your wild imaginations will come up with. This time the organizers have raised 2,000 Euro + X for the winner of the Jury prize and 500 Euro + X for the Registered Subscribers’ prize. As in previous editions the chosen work will participate in the exhibition held in Cremona from December 2014 to January 2015, and in Genova-Nervi between March and June 2015. The selected works will be published in a catalogue and twelve (12) of the illustrations will be chosen for the 2015 Tapirulan Calendar.

WYNG Foundation is calling for submissions for the 2014/2015 cycle of its Masters Award, a non-profit photography award for socially relevant issues of great importance to Hong Kong. This, third WYNG Masters Award competition in row, is themed “Waste” and open to entries from all over the world. Submitted images must relate to the theme “Waste” and be made in or relate to Hong Kong. The mission of the WYNG Masters Award is to stimulate discussion and to encourage development of social responsibility in Hong Kong. It also aims to support and raise the level of photography as an art form in Hong Kong while at the same time employing the medium to consider and discuss pressing social issues facing Hong Kong.

The Ilen CityOne Limerick Design Competition invites designers to submit graphic designs for the sails and hull of a new CityOne performance sailing dinghy. Design submissions should express and explore the CityOne’s dynamic, energetic, fast and modern clean lines. The graphic solution for these dinghies should be conducive to longevity of style, and be imagistically strong when viewed close-up, or at a distance in motion on a shimmering river. A high level of creative freedom is encouraged – bold shapes and strong colours seem best suited for application by spray-painting to the hull, and painting to the sail fabric. Photographic imagery and complex drawn shapes are not suited to the specific limits of conventional and spray painting.

Nikon has recently announced the Call for Entries for its 2014-2015 annual Photo Contest and photographers around the world and invited to join the competition, starting 15 September 2014. The Contest has been held since 1969 to provide an opportunity for photographers around the world to communicate and to enrich image-making culture for professionals and amateurs alike. The Grand Prize for 2014-2015 includes a trophy, an award certificate, Nikon products equivalent to 1,000,000 Yen (almost US $10,000) and the opportunity for the winner to show his or her portfolio on the Nikon Photo Contest Website. Several more prizes will be awarded to the best category entries. One most popular entry will be selected and special prizes will be awarded to the most promising entrants under age 19. This year for the first time, all categories in photography and video will accept entries from any digital device, including smartphones.

ParaType and Type Journal are inviting Cyrillic typeface designers around the world to participate in the Modern Cyrillic 2014 International Type Design Competition. Cyrillic fonts, created and/or released after 15 September 2009 may be submitted to the competition, with both released and unreleased designs being eligible. The winning entries will receive honorary diplomas “For Excellence in Type Design” and complimentary copies of the catalog with the selected designs. Modern Cyrillic is open to all and there is no limit to the number of entries. Both individuals and businesses may participate.

The Art Moves 2014 International billboard art competition has just opened for entries and all, especially young, artists interested in billboard art are invited to take part. The purpose of the Competition is to propagate and popularize billboard art and to encourage artists to create art engaged in the reality. Submitted works are intended to creatively respond to this year’s competition theme: More or less freedom? The competition slogan can be treated as a metaphor of all the processes taking place in the world today. Freedom was and still is a word of great value. At the same time, freedom is a paradoxical word. This is one of the fundamental ideas that drive individual and social life. In the history of mankind, great and wonderful, but also tragic things happened in the name of freedom. Paradoxically, freedom is most easily defined and appreciated when one tastes its lack (e.g. in a totalitarian state). When we have it, we do not notice it and it rapidly loses its real value – we take it for granted. So, what is freedom then? Is freedom essential to life? Should it be unlimited or have some limits? Can other people limit our freedom – because they also have a right to feel free? Is freedom responsibility or rather doing what one feels like doing? What do we really need? What do you need? More or less freedom?

The Trieste Contemporanea Committee, the L’Officina Cultural Association and the Studio Tommaseo of Trieste, in collaboration with the Institute for Contemporary Art – Zagreb, announce in 2014 the first edition of the Squeeze it Trieste Contemporanea Contest. The competition is dedicated to Franco Jesurun, a professional artist of the theater and founder of these three cultural organizations in Trieste. Studio Tommaseo establishes the competition in 2014, as part of the activities celebrating the Studio’s 40th anniversary. The contest is international and addressed to the European area, aiming to promote and support new artistic creations at the crossing of theater and the visual arts.

The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is launching a video competition – World of the IEC – asking you to create a new short video, illustrating what the IEC does. The challenge is to create a High Definition video (no longer than 3 minutes) which demonstrates the use and importance of IEC Standards and Conformity Assessment in one of the following areas: home, technology or renewable energy. The World of the IEC video competition has a prize fund of 5,500 Swiss Franc, 3,000 from which are reserved for the best video.

Entries are open for the 9th edition of the Arte Laguna Prize, the international contest that showcases the work of the finalists in the prestigious spaces of the Arsenale of Venice. Painting, sculpture, photography, video art and performance, virtual and digital art are the five categories in which artists can enroll, either online or via postal mail, until 6th November 2014. The five overall winners will receive a cash prize of 7,000 Euro each, and the works will remain their property. Among the participating artists the jury will also identify the winners of the art residencies, business for art prizes and personal exhibitions in international galleries.
