Part of the larger NEOM initiative, The Line aims to create a zero-carbon, ultra-modern urban environment spanning 170 kilometers. While its vision of sustainability, technology, and human-centric living is impressive, the project raises significant questions about its feasibility, environmental impact, and social implications. Non Architecture will award one winner, one selected by each jury, and a total of 7 honourable mentions. The 1st Prize is 1,000 Euro, publication in the Non Architecture Competitions book and website and reviews in digital magazines and several architecture blogs.

Non Architecture Competitions are calling for registration to the fifth Re-Draw competition, dedicated to Nakagin Capsule Tower. The Nakagin Capsule Tower was an experimental building located in the Ginza district of Tokyo, Japan. Designed by the Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa, it was constructed in 1972 and consisted of 140 individual capsules stacked together to form a tower that stood 13 floors tall. The aim of the “Re-Draw” competition is to develop one drawing to ‘represent’ an iconic architecture piece. The participants are asked to draft one image, with absolute freedom of scale, technique and level of abstraction.

The award was launched last year to honour those projects that didn’t take that approach and are unbuilt and unbuildable, either because they were designed to stay as such, or because their innovative charge brought them into the realm of the unpractical. Construction is the most obvious reward for an architectural project, but very often in order to make things buildable, architects have to sacrifice innovation and creativity and surrender to business as usual. Non Architecture will award 1 winner and 9 honourable mentions for each category, selected by the jurors collectively.

Nestled in the centre of Paris since 1977, the Centre Pompidou building, a glass and metal structure bathed in light, resembles a heart fed by monumental arteries in bright primary colours. Envisioned by its two architects, Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, as a genuinely living organism, it is also built in one of the capital’s oldest districts and the beating heart of Paris since Medieval times, the Beaubourg plateau. The aim of the “Re-Draw” competition is to develop one drawing to ‘represent’ an iconic architecture piece. The participants are asked to draft one image with absolute freedom of scale, technique, and level of abstraction.

Non Architecture is hosting a new design competition called “Spacecraft Design” and invites participants to create a design for a spaceship. The aim of the “Spacecraft Design” competition is to develop one drawing to communicate a conceptual design. The participants are asked to design a vehicle that responds to the requirements of the brief and one axonometric projection to represent it, with absolute freedom of interpretation, technique and level of abstraction. Even the concept of axonometric itself can be questioned in order to craft the most expressive way to represent the design. The best design will be awarded with 1,000 Euro, publication in the Non Architecture Competitions books and website and reviews in digital magazines and several architecture blogs. In addition, honorable mentions and other prizes will be awarded.

Non Architecture Competitions will award only one winner, selected by the jury collectively, and 6 honorable mentions, selected by each juror individually. The winning work will be awarded with 1,000 Euro and published in two books.

Non Architecture (NonA) started a new series of competitions on the topic of Reviving. It calls for proposals, for the 1st Reviving competition — Shandong Mines Park. Participants are asked to come up with creative proposals that would go beyond standardized models for development, informing local authorities with new ways to approach a reviving project for the Shandong Mines Park. Particular emphasis is posed on the issue of the dismissed mines, which constitute a unique feature but also a great challenge. How can the ecological and spatial damage be mitigated and transformed into new value? Non Architecture Competitions will award three winners, selected by the jurors individually, and 6 honorable mentions. A total of 10,000 Euro will be awarded between the best three proposals — 7,000 of which are reserved for the proposal awarded with the First Prize.

Non Architecture (NonA) calls for alternative housing models to disrupt the real estate market in a scenario of prolonged social distancing.
