The RWS Contemporary Watercolour Competition is an annual competition that aims to encourage innovation and experimentation in watercolour painting, spanning work on paper in watercolour, acrylic, gouache, pen & ink and watercolour mixed media. Artists may enter up to three works which, if selected, are exhibited at Bankside Gallery in London, the home of the Royal Watercolour Society. The Royal Photographic Society (RPS) in partnership with the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) has put out a call for the world’s best scientific images. Scientists creating images to support their research and photographers making images to record science in all its aspects showing applications of diverse photographic techniques are encouraged to submit images. 100 of the best – selected by scientists, photographers, and those working in the field – will be included in an exhibition that will open in Newcastle in September 2013 as part of the British Science Festival and will then tour the UK and abroad.

House of Illustration and The Folio Society invite you to enter the third edition of The Book Illustration Competition. Following on from the success of The Outsider and The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories, the book to be illustrated this year is Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. The competition is open to anyone over 18 who is not a Folio Society published illustrator. The first prize is £4,500 commission from The Folio Society and there are five runners-up available, each £500 in cash.

The Call for entries for the European Design Awards (ED-Awards) 2013 has recently been announced. The European Design Awards is the comprehensive annual awards organization celebrating the best of graphic design, illustration and digital design in Europe. A joint effort by 15 communication design magazines from across the continent, the ED-Awards is a brilliant way to publicize your work on an international level. Gold, Silver and Bronze award winners will be announced for each entry category. Some special prizes will also be announced. An Award ceremony will be held in 2013.

The 21st Curtas Vila do Conde – International Film Festival, taking place from 6th to 14th of July 2013, announces the call for entries for new short films. Submitted films should be produced in 2012 or 2013, within the duration limit of 60 minutes, in film (35 or 16 mm) or video. The Festival has eight competitive sections open for Portuguese and International films and videos. Curtas Vila do Conde’s programme consists of films, exhibitions, performances, workshops, concerts and, of course, parties. In 2013, the Festival will be celebrating 21 years of existence.
